Basically a high-end workstations that just happened to have an OS written in Lisp, and bunch of user's program also implemented in Lisp, a lisp compiler, and so on. Differences in computational environment, and how one worked with them existed, but from the hardware point of view, Lisp machines, were also von Neumann architecture.
